Dill Pickles Recipe SOS Layout

This month for the Scrap Our Stash Challenge, we are challenged to either use a scrapbook recipe for our page, or to do a layout with a recipe. I’ve had this layout sitting around for awhile and just needed to finish it so this was the perfect motivation for me.

Grandpa Owl Card

I liked my Grandma owl that I made the other day on this card that I decided to use the same colors for a Grandpa owl. I didn’t have any patterned paper that I wanted to use (or cared to try matching since I wasn’t thinking and colored first). So I just used cardstock. I needed something more than plain cardstock though so I embossed lines on the blue paper and then inked them in brown with a sponge. I just did this free style with my trimmer and stylus and eyeballed the measurements. I used my marker for the faux stitching. I typically don’t do color challenges but the timing of the My Time to Craft post fit with my plans to make this card and the direction I wanted to go with it.

My mojo was working for me tonight! Unfortunately there was no natural light when I took the pictures but you get the idea.

Products used: K&Company chipboard, CTMH Heart of Winter Project Pack, CTMH organdy ribbon, K&Company pearls. I added details to the flower with markers and ink. (challenge=sketch)

Products used: CTMH Heart of Winter Project Pack, CTMH Chocolate grosgrain ribbon, Cricut Accent Essentials, and button (unknown). I added details on the flower with a marker and I used a piercing tool to add details around the scallop border. (challenge=paper piercing)

Products used: CTMH Heart of Winter Project Pack, CTMH White Daisy Just Blooms, Making Memories Chocolate paint. I used the paint as the centers of the flowers – a great technique! (challenge=paint)

Products used: CTMH Heart of Winter Project Pack, clip and hemp (unknown). I poked a hole through the flower to attach the clip to it with the hemp. (challenge=binding)

Products used: CTMH Heart of Winter Project Pack, CTMH White Daisy Just Blooms, DCWV vellum quote, CTMH Chocolate grosgrain ribbon, K&Company pearls. (challenge=quote)

Products used: DCWV textured cardstock and pattern paper, Stampin’ Up black grosgrain ribbon, CTMH Sparkles and Cranberry cardstock, button and flowers unknown. (challenge=red/black/white)

Products used: CTMH Boom-Di-Ada Creative Basics papers, flowers from CTMH Heart of Winter Project Pack, CTMH Hollyhock ricrac, acrylic frame by Fancy Pants, CTMH Say It In Style stamp set, and Hampton Art glitter glue. The acrylic frame is actually two pieces. I used the glitter glue to stick them together and then I attached it to my project with Liquid Glass. Glitter glue was also used for the center of the flowers. (challenge=clear window)

These projects were all done for challenges at 365 Cards.

Love Card

I am thrilled with how this card turned out. I made it for someone very special in my life. It’s been a long time since I’ve made a square card and now I think I’m going to be making more! It’s a nice change. Papers are CTMH Heart of Winter Project Paper Pack, chipboard and pearls are from K&Company. The chipboard was one piece that I cut to make two and I added a pearl to the flower. I cut the scallop square with my Accent Essentials Cricut cartridge.

I used this sketch from the sweetest thing Sunday Sketch Challenge #26.

Working with dark photos

Dark photos can be difficult to scrapbook. I have learned the best way to scrap these types of pictures is to start with a dark background and then highlight the photos throughout the layout. This will give it a dramatic look and your pictures will stand out as opposed to disappearing on the page. It’s best to keep the matting at 1/16 or 1/8 of an inch. Mulberry paper added a great touch to the layout below. I tore an opening in the mulberry paper (use a wet paintbrush or waterbrush to make this easier) creating a frame which I then stitched to my layout. The dark background works with the darker photo instead of against it, drawing your attention directly to the photo.

Monogram Titles

For a standout title, try using large monogram letters for your entire title. I used Basic Grey undressed chipboard monograms for these layouts. (Note: chipboard that is plain and unfinished is often called undressed, bare, or naked.) For extra letters, you can trace on chipboard and cut them out. Next, I traced the letters on cardstock, cut out, embellished, and glued to the chipboard. Be sure to embellish the letters before adhering to the chipboard. The ways to embellish these monograms are endless. You can use buttons, brads, eyelets, snaps, rivets, charms, ribbon, fiber, clips, staples, tags, diecuts, etc. You can also use techniques such as stamping, stitching, inking, distressing, doodling, etc. My favorite adhesive when using chipboard is Liquid Glass by CTMH. There is a bit of drying time involved but it will hold forever!

Acrylic Letters

I love acrylic letters but these clear embellishments can be hard to challenging at first. This layout shows many different ways to attach acrylics without your adhesive showing…stitch them on your page, attach with brads or staples, or use glue dots and then cover it with ribbon, buttons, or other embellishments.

Overlays

Although I do not use them very often because of their cost, overlays can add a lot to a layout. On the page below I added pictures underneath the overlay and on the top I added the title and chipboard flower. I then stitched the overlay to the background paper to hold everything in place.
