CTMH Technique Blog Hop – Masking

Welcome to our Technique Blog Hop! This month there are 12 of us highlighting the Masking Technique as shown on page 15 in the 2011 Autumn/Winter Idea Book! Masking is when you use a piece of scrap paper to cover an image (or part of an image) so you can stamp around the original image. Supplies used are all Close to My Heart unless otherwise noted: Cricut Art Philosophy Collection, Lagoon ink, Sunkiss Yellow ink, Blush ink, rubber brayer, Baby Pink reinker, Create-a-Shade Pearl Paint, Ribbon Rounds – Blush Collection, White Daisy Cardstock, DCWV Alphabet Stickers, Studio18 Rhinestone Stickers, and Kaisercraft Rhinestones. Layout is loosely based on a March 2008 Page Map sketch.

I used the Cricut to cut an image for my masking. I used a brayer to apply ink over the mask to create my background. Then, I misted with a spray pen filled with water, Baby Pink reinker, and Create-a-Shade Pearl Paint to add to my final background. The accent flowers are scraps from the mask I used and they are inked with Sunkiss Yellow, Blush, and Lagoon.

CTMH Spotlight Blog Hop – Reinkers

Welcome to the October 2011 Close to My Heart Spotlight Blog Hop! This month we are using reinkers. If you are thinking to yourself “what else are reinkers for besides actually re-inking your stamp pads” then this is the hop for you! As you hop through you will find a variety of ideas that I hope you will try. If you are like me it will be a good challenge!

Supplies used are all Close to My Heart unless otherwise noted: Amethyst, Heavenly Blue, Sweet Leaf, and Baby Pink reinkers, Prisma Glitter, Create-a-Shade Pearl Paint, Spray Pen, White Daisy Grosgrain Ribbon, Paper Blooms Flowers (link is not exactly what I used but similar), White Daisy Cardstock. DCWV Alphabet Stickers, and Lavender Magic Mesh. Based on a June 2011 Page Maps sketch.

This closeup really shows all the glittery shine! Notice the Pearl Paint on the flowers, background paper, and title paper as well as the Prisma Glitter on the butterfly. Scroll down for full details.

I first used reinkers to create my background paper. I put the reinker on a paper plate and then dipped a crumpled up napkin into it and dabbed color onto my paper. Next, I mixed Create-a-Shade Pearl Paint and water in a spray pen and sprayed on the background to add a bit of glitz.

While this was drying, I used the Heavenly Blue reinker to dye some White Daisy Grosgrain Ribbon and Amethyst reinker to dye butterflies from the Just Blooms Paper Shapes Flutter Shapes. I also sprinkled the wet butterflies with some Prisma Glitter. The new tweezers worked great for dipping. This is the first time I have played with reinkers and one thing I have learned is that the color is darker than you would think when you use straight reinker for dying. Next time I will mix with water to get a lighter color. Another thing I learned…make sure things are completely dry before adding them to your layout. I didn’t realize my ribbon was still wet and over time the dye soaked into the surrounding paper. Luckily it’s not very noticeable because of the background I chose.

I used reinker to color my flowers. I used a waterbrush dipped in reinker to color the petals from the outside inward, then I sprayed them with the same paint/water mixture that I used for my background paper.

I mixed Baby Pink reinker with Create-a-Shade Paint and painted paper that I used for the base of my title.

Other ideas for reinkers are:

mix with Liquid Glass
mix with Liquid Applique
paint with the reinker using brushes
mix reinker and water in a spray pen
use in glass ornaments to color

The February Challenge at Scrap Our Stash this month is LOVE. I really dug into my stash for this layout. I think the patterned paper may have been from the Target Dollar Spot at least a year ago, the scalloped baseboards are from when a local scrapbook store closed years ago, and the eyelets and brads are even older. The ricrac is from a bag I found at a rummage sale! I am not one for empty space on a layout or just plain cardstock so I filled the white cardstock space with heart-shaped eyelets to create my own patterned paper. I painted the chipboard border with a pink base topped with a coat of specialty glaze.

Welcome to another Close to My Heart Product Spotlight Blog Hop! This month we are featuring Just Bloom flowers! Flowers are one of my favorite products and with two girls I add them to almost every page. Plus, the Summer Posies and the White Daisies are currently on sale!

My favorite flowers are the White Daisies because you can make them any color you want by using reinkers and dying them. There are so many things that you can do with these flowers: add a little or a lot of color with reinkers and ink, stamp them with any design and color for added detail, layer them, or paint them. There are many things you can add as the flower center: a drop of paint or glitter glue, buttons, brads, eyelets, rhinestones/gems/sparkles, pearls, a ribbon knot, sticker, or stamped image.

You can see many of these techniques on the flowers on my layout. I stamped some of them with different images and because I just love the shimmer I painted them all with Create-a-Shade paint. I also love sparkles so I added them as my flower centers and around the flower clusters. The Color Ready alphabet stickers are sponged with Sweet Leaf for a perfect color match to my layout.

Embellish…your MM organizer!

Gee, this might turn into a mini series of decorating your scrapbooking tools and more! It all started when I finally got around to decorating these jars.

Products used: MM organizer, CTMH Tickled Pink papers, CTMH Sparkles, Kaiser rhinestones, Prima Say it in Style Crystals, Petaloo flowers, and Mod Podge.

Embellish is defined as: to make beautiful, decorate. This is exactly what I have been doing with all my scrapbook organizers and tools lately. It makes my scrapbook room even more enjoyable and inspiring. These Making Memories desk organizers come in a plain white. They are nice as is but I have enjoyed making them my own. I bought one from Crop Chocolate and had trouble finding more after that. I thought I found a good deal on my additional ones and was disappointed. I learned that even though they advertise with the same picture and they are both MM, I should have bought the ones that were $40 and not $20. The first one I got is actually wood, solid, and heavy. The other ones I thought I found at a decent price are cheap cardboard/chipboard-like. They are very like-weight and will definitely not last as long. Christine wasn’t very happy with me that she had to trade with me so I could have the nice one but I made it up to her by decorating them. Now if Michael’s ever gets my set of drawers in again I will show you some other things I have done. Have a great day!

And to celebrate we are having a CTMH 2009 World Cardmaking Day Blog Hop! This is a great group of consultants who will be sharing some wonderful cards with you today. It’s a round robin hop so you may start here or if you have come from Debra’s blog you are on the right path and welcome!

I discovered the Create-a-Shade Pearl Paint when making this card. I used a paint brush to apply the paint to the B&T Duo paper. It gives it such a beautiful shimmery shine! I also like using the Creative Basics when making cards. It comes with bulk ribbon and paper to make sets of cards. This combined with the Wishes card idea book makes for quick cards at a reasonable price and is this paper is perfect for some funand contemporary Christmas cards. I have two pictures of the card to try and show you how much it shines. Give it a try!

A Bunch of Cards

My mojo was working for me tonight! Unfortunately there was no natural light when I took the pictures but you get the idea.

Products used: K&Company chipboard, CTMH Heart of Winter Project Pack, CTMH organdy ribbon, K&Company pearls. I added details to the flower with markers and ink. (challenge=sketch)

Products used: CTMH Heart of Winter Project Pack, CTMH Chocolate grosgrain ribbon, Cricut Accent Essentials, and button (unknown). I added details on the flower with a marker and I used a piercing tool to add details around the scallop border. (challenge=paper piercing)

The acrylic frame is actually two pieces. I used the glitter glue to stick them together and then I attached it to my project with Liquid Glass. Glitter glue was also used for the center of the flowers. (challenge=clear window)

Create your own 3D embellishments

I made my own 3D embellishments by layering flowers and chipboard, then added a gem on top for a bit of bling. Simple, yet beautiful!

Lexi was her first Webkin. Supplies used: CTMH Sonata paper and cardstock (Buttercup, Colonial White, and Chocolate), unknown chipboard letters, flowers, and flourishes, MM paint, pink flowers from a rummage sale, Precious Finds adhesive gems by EK Success, and CTMH Chocolate ink.

This is a simple layout. By making the title black and the background light it keeps the focus on the important parts of the layout.

Painted storage containers

I found these cardboard type containers on a rummage sale. I made them mine own by painting them in bright colors with MM paint. I stamped the flowers with white paint and added ribbon around the edges with Glue Lines for a finished touch. I use mine as storage in my scrapbook room but there are endless possiblities to what you could do with them. Choose colors and themes to suit your needs for your scrapbook room, the office , the kids room, or even the garage. Hmm…I think I might have to keep an eye out for more of these!

Monogram Titles

For a standout title, try using large monogram letters for your entire title. I used Basic Grey undressed chipboard monograms for these layouts. (Note: chipboard that is plain and unfinished is often called undressed, bare, or naked.) For extra letters, you can trace on chipboard and cut them out. Next, I traced the letters on cardstock, cut out, embellished, and glued to the chipboard. Be sure to embellish the letters before adhering to the chipboard. The ways to embellish these monograms are endless. You can use buttons, brads, eyelets, snaps, rivets, charms, ribbon, fiber, clips, staples, tags, diecuts, etc. You can also use techniques such as stamping, stitching, inking, distressing, doodling, etc. My favorite adhesive when using chipboard is Liquid Glass by CTMH. There is a bit of drying time involved but it will hold forever!

Altered Frames

I absolutely love how these frames turned out and they are just what I wanted to display in my scrapbook room. I made one for each of my daughter’s with some of my favorite pictures of them. They each helped choose the paper for their frame. The frames have an easel on the back and a hook for hanging. I have mine hung because I need all the extra desk space I can get in my scrapbook room. They do hang out a bit from the wall because of the easel. The frames are Bare Elements by Creative Imagination and I can’t wait to try more of their products.

For Christine’s frame, I used Making Memories acrylic paint (chocolate) and painted the edges of the frame (under the paper is white, no need to waste). Next I cut the patterned paper to fit the frame, marked the center square on the back and used an exacto knife to cut out the center. This takes a bit of measuring. The paper is Die Cuts With a View from the Glitter Stack. It adds a lot of sparkle and dimension on it’s own, which was perfect for this project. Next, I adhered the paper and her name. I used Mod Podge (I prefer matte) as my adhesive and also added a coat to the top to protect it. Note: When using Mod Podge, apply in thin coats and be sure to let the bottom coat (under your paper) dry before applying a coat overtop. The letters are Silver Glitter Alphabet Chipboard by K&Co. The glitter was coming off some of the letters so I sealed them with a layer of Mod Podge and it worked like magic. I painted the chipboard flourish with MM paint (capri) and added a couple coats of MM Specialty Glaze – Glitter. It’s hard to see from the photo but it adds a nice extra touch. I finished it off with the flowers using silver brads in the center and adhering with glue dots.

For Steph’s frame I left the outside white, which is how it comes. This eliminated the first step of painting. The paper again is DCWV and I painted the flourish using MM (sky) paint and the glitter glaze. I wish I knew what these chipboard letters are because the glitter on them is sealed very well and I really like them. If you recognize them please let me know. The brad in the center of the flower is a Bazzill Really Big Brad. I rubbed it on a glue pad and then sprinkled glitter over it. After that was dry I added a coat of Mod Podge overtop to seal it.

CD Box

This originally was an advertising box that came in the mail, I think with CDs in it. I don’t even remember anymore what it first looked like. I knew when I got it though that it should be altered as opposed to thrown away. It’s amazing what a little acrylic paint can do. I painted it, covered it with paper and pictures using Mod Podge, added embellishments and rub-ons and turned this trash into a treasure!

Acrylic Paints and Prima Flowers

Ahh, two of my favorite things!! I did this layout the other day and didn’t have any brown brads for the centers of my flowers. As an alternative, I used just a drop of acrylic paint for the center. These are fairly small flowers and I only needed a small drop so when you try this the first time you may need to practice on a couple. It is an inexpensive way to match your layout perfectly and those acrylic paints we have sitting on our shelves.

Altered Clipboards for Kids

Altered clipboards are a great gift for kids. They are inexpensive and fun to make. All the kids I have made them for love them.

Supplies needed: Clipboard, ModPodge (comes in glossy or matte, I prefer matte), paper and/or paint, stamps and/or embellishments, fibers/ribbon, exacto knife, and a pen. A brayer is helpful but not required.

Directions:
1. Sometimes the top clip on the clipboard will screw off. If it does, take it off for easier decorating. If not, you can work around it by planning a design where you paint the top part and/or have a straight paper line.
2. Chose papers, colors, and embellishments for your clipboard. Make a rough draft drawing or have a design idea in your head. When chosing a design, remember to keep the majority of the main surface flat because it will be used for writing. Because of this stamping is a great choice of embellishing. Keep stickers in the corners.
3. Any areas that will be painted should be done first. I like to paint the side/edge of the clipboard for a more finished look.
4. Next cover with your chosen paper. Use the Mod Podge as your adhesive, applying a thin coate to the clipboard. Use a foam brush for complete coverage and don’t worry applying the Mod Podge beyond where you are placing the paper. Place the paper on the clipboard and use a brayer to roll over the top of the paper so that it is secure. Let dry.
5. Flip the clipboard over and using the exacto knife, trim the paper around the clipboard.
6. Stamp, embellish as desired. Mod Podge works well as an adhesive for diecuts and paper flowers like in my examples.
7. Cover the entire clipboard with two thin layers of Mod Podge. Let dry between coats to avoid bubbling. Also, apply the Mod Podge well around the edges of the chipboard. This will give it a more finished look and ensure that the paper you’ve applied is secure. (If it starts coming loose, what kid won’t pull/pick at it until it comes apart.)
8. Use ribbon or fiber to tie a pen to the clipboard. Make sure it is long enough for comfortable writing.

Tip: To avoid bubbles when using Mod Podge (as shown on Stephanie’s clipboard) remember two things. 1) Use thing coats. Don’t worry – It will stick and too much is not a good thing. 2) Give plenty of drying time between coats, especially when you’ve used it as an adhesive underneath and before applying the top protective coat. If you do get a small bubble, you can try to roll it out with the brayer. If that doesn’t work just leave it. You will do more damage than good and the great news is that I have had this happen and after it dries the bubble disappears!
