August 2010 CTMH Product Spotlight Blog Hop – Background Stamping

Well, it is that time again, time for another blog hop! The hop makes a circle so you can start anywhere and continue through until you make it back to the blog you started with. If you have already started and came from Karen’s blog then you are on the right track.

This month we are doing something a bit different and showcasing a technique rather than a specific product. We will all be using our stamps to create backgrounds. You can use any stamps for this, they do not have to be specified as “background” stamps and you will see that as you go through the hop.

For my project I have created 2 cards with the same basic design, same color scheme, and same stamp set for 2 different looks.

Once I chose my colors and stamp set, I cut my papers using a card pattern from Wishes. For my stamped background I started by “coloring” my piece of White Daisy Cardstock with Sunflower ink. To do this, I just rubbed the ink pad directly on the paper. Next, I random stamped in my 3 colors of ink and added embellishments. Tip: when random stamping do not worry about creating a pattern, simply stamp each image 3 times making a triangle. It is important to stamp off the paper for a natural look.

For this first card I chose the star stamp and if you look close there is also a star pattern stamped in the sunflower color. I used mini brads in the felt button shape.

For my second card I used the same pattern as my first card but rotated it and swapped out the stars for flowers and dots.

Supplies used are all CTMH unless otherwise noted: Heartfelt Whimsy Felt Die-Cut Sheets, Circle Around Stamp Set, Dutch Blue, Sunflower, and Tulip Inks and Cardstock, unknown ribbon, White Daisy brads, and Wishes.

Create Flowers with Non-Flower Stamps

The challenge over at Scrap Our Stash this month is to use flowers on your project. Today I’m going to show you how to use stamps that you may already have in a new way to create some flowers and make the most out of your stamps!

The first stamp I chose was a butterfly. It is very easy to transform butterfly wings into flowers. For those of you who are more visual learners , I took step-by-step pictures.
1. Stamp multiple butterfly images on scrap paper.

2. Cut out the butterfly wings, you can already see how they look like flower petals.

3. For this project I used another stamp for my stem. Flourish stamps also make great stems or bases for flowers. Next, I added some adhesive (a glue dot works well) to the top of my stem and added the petals. Just rearrange them until they are how you want and remember – flowers are not perfect so don’t sweat trying to make it look that way! Also notice that I inked the edges of each of the petals for more distinction. I chose to add both the small and large wings to my flower for a layered look but you could use them to create two flowers, a larger one and a smaller one. One tip when making your flowers is that it is important to work with an odd number of petals, guaranteed that they will look nicer that way. I used 7 for my large flower and 5 for the layer inside.

4. Last, I added some finishing touches and made a card. See those leaves? Did you guess that those are leftover butterfly wings? I just flipped them over and inked them green!

Supplies used are all CTMH: Embrace Life Stamp Set, Crystal Blue and Sweet Leaf inks, Crystal Blue and Colonial White Cardstock, Crystal Blue Waxy Flax, Sponge Dauber, and Clear Sparkles.

Other stamps that work well to create flowers are hearts and I’ve get an Easter Egg stamp set that is fun to use. If your not a stamper, diecut shapes and punchies work well too!

My Christmas project is an advent calendar. I have wanted to do one for forever, found one on sale, and I’m finally getting around to it. Now is the perfect time because it is done in plenty of time to use it this year.

Supplies: Karen Foster Countdown Calendar, DCWV Christmas Stack paper, DCWV Nana’s Kid’s paper, and DCWV numbers from a sticker stack.

My original plan for this was to use all 4 sides of the drawers to create 4 different themes. I was a bit disappointed that that idea didn’t work. This particular box was far from the best quality. The drawers were too tight for me to try to add paper to the sides and I didn’t dare use Mod Podge, which I like to use for all my altered projects. The notches on the drawers were also not even which was quite annoying. Originally, I was planning to create a template and use it to trace all of the drawer fronts. Good thing I realized this early because they would not have all lined up. Instead, I had to trace each drawer (and on the side I would be using) on my paper and glue them on right away. It worked out in the end but took a bit longer than it should have. I was also stumped on embellishing. This is very plain for me but I just don’t know what I can add because the drawers need to slide in/out so it has to all be flat. The only thing I have come up with is maybe a red ribbon all the way around the outside of the box with a bow on the top; this would match both sets of papers. Please share any ideas you might have. I’d love to hear more suggestions. It was the kid’s idea that I decorate the opposite side of the box to countdown to birthdays. At first they wanted baby because I am expecting and I thought I’d do pastels that could double as Easter but when I was limited to 2 sides instead of 4 they chose birthdays and that will work for the baby too. Here’s the other side:

July CTMH Spotlight Blog Hop featuring Cupcake Sprinkles!

Welcome to the July Close to My Heart Spotlight Blog Hop! This month we are showcasing the popular stamp set Cupcake Sprinkles. Here is the card I created with instructions below:

Supplies used: Cherry-O Level 2 Paper Packet, Clear Cards, Brown Staz-On ink, Block Buddy Set, Wishes, Cupcake Sprinkles stamp set, Liquid Applique, Craft Heater, and Chocolate and Crystal Blue inks.

When using the clear cards make sure that you remove the film on both the inside and outside of the card. For my card, first I cut the polka-dot B&T Duos paper into a circle for my background and adhered it to the inside. Next, using the circle Block Buddy as my guide, I placed my dot-dash stamp around it and stamped with Staz-On ink on the front of the card. I stamped my cupcake and added Liquid Applique for a yummy frosting look, then cut it out and added it to the front of the card. Last, I finished my card by adding the sentiment to the inside – I stamped this 3 times to make it darker and show up on the patterned paper. I used the Inner Court card pattern from Wishes.
